Critical Voice by Terry Locke

Walking uphill

They say
          it’s uphill all the way.
The pressure of impact stays
with the ball of the foot
as the body tilts forward
         from the basic
                  standing
                          position.
All the way
the load you carry undulates –
your own version of minimal comfort
          rocked by your spinal column
wavelike
          with an occasional heave
signalling the search for a readjustment
                  to the condition
contouring the uphill slope
         of the track your feet
will plod   will plod
         will know in the contraction
and relaxation of calf muscle
         & the slant
taking it all in
                  the upward vista
no via dolorosa this
